In the Han Dynasty of China, Zhang Qian was sent on a diplomatic mission to the Western Region and opened the Silk Road. In 1877, the German geographer Lichhofen first mentioned the term "Silk Road". In the development and exchange of human civilization in the past two thousand years, Silk Road has lost some of its relevance as a trade artery, but has maintained its reputation as a jewel throughout the history of cultural exchanges between the East and the West. Numerous works have sung its glory and achievements.
With today’s new impulses, the common memory of the countries along the Silk Road will be brought back to life, and the bonds between the people will be further tightened to enrich the material and spiritual civilization of the people of the world and promote the development of world peace and stability with the joint efforts its people living .
As a special industry, book businesses are valued for both their economic and cultural achievements; their workings are regional, but when the window of the bookstroes are opened, insights from its operators will transcend the limits of the region. The books at the core of theirs very particular sector present the people with a unique combination knowledge, information and entertainment. The space of
bookstores allow glimpses into a world deeply dwelling on local cities’ heritage and culture.
Such a local-oriented business bears a rich cultural diversity . However, to satisfy today’s demanding expectations of the modern consumer all the technological wizardry of the Internet era, with mobile communication and mobile digital commerce allow business breakthroughs, and a new balance between business and culture in support of the bookstores in today’s transforming world.
In this spirit of diversity and new joint perspectives, representatives from bookstores of all the Silk Road countries gather in Xi'an, the starting point of the Silk Road, to discuss the dilemma of their businesses between an optimistic anticipation of the future, and its traditions from a rich past. Based on the principles of good mutual understanding, communication, and cross-fertilization between all the actors and
their market’s development, the forum invited speakers from 6 countries to focus on the strategic outlook for of bookstores: Challenges and opportunities in an optimistic Era before the wider prospects of the global book industry . The talks will provide a panorama on the current status and future perspectives for bookstores along the Silk Road countries and cities, while providing ideas and action plans for this
industry.
The forum will publish the ‘International Report on the International Influence of Silk Road Countries and City Bookstores’. The report has been commissioned with research and expertise from the "Global 50 Ranking of the International Publishing Industry” report by the internationally renowned research institute RW Content and Consulting for the international book industry together with the Bookdao New
Publishing Institute.
