本书全面描绘了中国文学传统的各类景象，且以世界文明史、文学史为参照。年代跨度自远古迄当代，而叙述对象还包括了中国港澳台地区作家、海外华人的文学作品。首次按诗歌、散文、小说、戏剧等文学体裁为主题划分篇章，而第一篇章总括介绍中国文学的关键要素。每篇章内容以时间为序，独立成篇，其中涉及到的话题包括：相关作品的历史背景、流行文化的影响、佛教的冲击、女性的角色、与少数民族文学语言的交流，等等。

梅维恒（Victor H. Mair）

　　1943年生，哈佛大学中国文学博士，著名汉学家，宾夕法尼亚大学亚洲及中东研究系教授、宾大考古及人类学博物馆顾问，还担任京都大学、香港大学、北京大学、四川大学等多所高校的兼任教职；精通中文、日文、藏文和梵文，被认为是当代西方汉学界最具开拓精神的学人，著述宏丰，研究领域包括：中国语言文学、中古史、敦煌学。
